“Generics Drill Big Holes into Canadians” Pockets than Americans” Reveals New Study

According to the new research conducted by a new Fraser Institute, Canadian prices for generic prescription medicines are on average more than twice of the American prices for the same drugs.

During the study, both Canadian and the U.S. prices for 200 drugs, comprising 100 most prominently prescribed generic and brand name drugs in 2006 were contrasted. It was found that Canadian prices for generic drugs were 115 per cent higher than the U.S. prices on average. In addition, Canadian prices for brand name medicines were also found 51 per cent lesser than American prices on average.

In 2003, Canadian prices for generic drugs and brand name drugs were 78 percent higher and 43 percent lower than the U.S prices respectively. This simply implies that Canadian prices for generics have amplified compared to the U.S., whereas prices for brand-name drugs have reduced.

But why are Canadians paying nearly more than twice of the American prices for generic prescription drugs? It is just on account of government policies which protect generic drug manufacturers and pharmacy retailers from normal market forces that might cut prices naturally.

What’s more, whereas Canadian governments attempt to compel patients to employ generics instead of brand-name preparations, the U.S. governments permit consumers to make own choice.

So, Canadians would be in a far better position if governments immediately revoked those public policies which deform the market for prescription drugs. This would result price reduction and better calculated use of generics.

April 4th 2008 Viagra Works For Man And Animal

Anti-impotence drug Viagra has given a ‘new lease of life’ to a dog suffering from a heart condition.

Talisker, a three-year-old border collie, developed heart problems after contracting a lung infection.

This meant that whenever he got a little too excited, he would lose consciousness as his heart was not pumping blood fast enough.

Owner Lesley Strong admits that though she had been ’shocked’ when the vet told her to give her pooch Viagra, it certainly worked wonders for her beloved pet.

“I was shocked when the vet recommended Viagra and it raised a few eyebrows when I first collected the prescription. But it’s given Talisker a new lease of life,” the Telegraph quoted her.

March 18th 2008 Viagra (sildenafil citrate) Information

FDA SUMMARY [11/2007]:  FDA has received reports of cases of sudden decreases or loss of hearing following the use of PDE5 inhibitors, Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and Revatio for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.  In some cases, the sudden hearing loss was accompanied by tinnitus and dizziness.  Medical follow-up information was often limited for the cases reported postmarketing, which makes it difficult to determine whether these reports are directly related to the use of one of these drugs, an underlying medical condition, or other risk factors for hearing loss, a combination of these factors, or other factors. Sudden hearing loss was also reported in a few patients in clinical trials of these drugs.  In response to a request from FDA, the manufacturers of Viagra, Levitra and Cialis have revised the labeling for these products to address the potential risk of sudden hearing loss and to guide patients on what to do if they experience sudden problems with their hearing. FDA is currently working with the sponsor to revise the labeling for Revatio. The approved revised labeling for Viagra, Levitra and Cialis includes a new Precaution and updated Adverse Reactions sections.  The revised labeling is available at Drugs@FDA.
